Description
Job Summary:
The CIDACS is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to develop geospatial modeling of climate and environmental data and assist in building the CIDACS-Clima platform.
Key Highlights:
1. Join a multidisciplinary team in an innovative climate and health project
2. Develop geospatial modeling and curation of climate data
3. Contribute to science on health and climate change
The Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health – CIDACS, a laboratory affiliated with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Bahia, is selecting a post\-doctoral fellow to develop geospatial modeling of climate and environmental data on the CIDACS\-Clima platform. This platform integrates climate, environmental, and health data to investigate the effects of climate change on population health in contexts of social vulnerability, as well as analyze how environmental and social protection policies can mitigate these effects.
The candidate will join the core research team of the project “CIDACS Climatic and Environmental Platform (CIDACS\-Clima): Data to Study Climate and Health”, developed by the Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA), located at the Bahia Technology Park (Salvador, BA, Brazil), in partnership with the London School of Hygiene \& Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
The candidate will be responsible for assisting in the construction of the climate and environmental data platform, performing data curation (selection, collection, evaluation, and harmonization) from diverse sources (e.g., meteorological stations, reanalyses, satellites, among others). The candidate will also support the development of statistical *downscaling* models aimed at refining the spatial resolution of data for use in research on associations between climate change and extreme events, and health and socioeconomic outcomes in the Brazilian population.
We seek highly motivated, creative candidates with strong communication skills in a multidisciplinary environment.
We strongly encourage applications from Black researchers, LGBTQIA\+, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups.
**Responsibilities and Duties**
* Curate and update meteorological and air quality databases hosted on the CIDACS\-Clima climatic and environmental platform;
* Identify new data sources useful for enriching the platform;
* Conduct validation studies of meteorological and air quality data;
* Contribute to team training and capacity-building activities;
* Support efforts to perform statistical downscaling of atmospheric pollutant data (with focus on PM2\.5\) and near-surface air temperature at census tract level;
* Participate in writing scientific articles and technical notes describing the methodology applied, results obtained, etc.;
* Attend scientific or technical events and planning/organizational meetings for project activities;
* Contribute to team training and capacity-building activities.
**Requirements and Qualifications**
* Ph.D. in fields such as Meteorology, Geography, Statistics, Remote Sensing, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related disciplines, with experience in geo-statistical or spatial statistical modeling.
* Experience analyzing large meteorological and environmental databases (e.g., satellite data, climate reanalyses, monitoring station data).
* Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R, etc.) and specialized software for atmospheric modeling and spatial analysis.
* Experience in scientific writing for journal articles and research proposals, in Portuguese and/or English.
* Full-time availability for project activities, with immediate start date.
**Preferred Qualifications\*:**
* Familiarity with atmospheric pollution data and pollutant transport/dispersion models.
* Knowledge of statistical downscaling and spatial interpolation methods (e.g., kriging, machine learning methods).
* Advanced English proficiency for participation and discussion in meetings with international partners.
* Absence of these qualifications does not preclude application, but they will be considered advantageous during candidate selection.
**Additional Information**
The selected candidate will receive a fellowship of R$ 8\.000 (for candidates holding a completed Ph.D.), for a period of 12 (twelve) months, with high potential for renewal until the end of the project’s validity, administered by the Fiocruz Support Foundation – FIOTEC.
**Fellowship Commitments at CIDACS**
Commitments will be formalized through a Work Plan and Activity Schedule established by the research project;
Dedicate full-time effort to the research project;
Not receive fellowships from any other entity;
Consult the project coordinator at CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA and partners before accepting any financial support from other public or private funding sources for the research project covered by this fellowship;
Not modify the project (initial plan, timelines, etc.) without prior consent from the team;
Submit scientific reports and financial utilization reports within deadlines specified in the Work Plan, accompanied by requested documentation.
Not leave the institution where the research project is conducted without obtaining explicit authorization from the project coordinator at CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA and partners, via a justified request submitted by the advisor/supervisor.
The restriction above does not apply to:
Participation in courses relevant to the research project supporting the fellowship, lasting less than one month;
Attendance at scientific or technological meetings, with or without presentation of work.
Acknowledge CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA in all outputs (articles, books, abstracts presented at meetings, and any other publication or dissemination format) that result, wholly or partially, from the fellowship granted by CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA.
Also indicate support from any public or private funding sources that may exist;
If the research project supported by the fellowship has received financial support from any other public or private funding source, the researcher commits to explicitly acknowledge and reference such support, clearly identifying its source, in all dissemination formats mentioned above;
Ensure appropriate protection of intellectual property rights that may arise from the project supported by CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA and other project partners.
CIDACS conducts studies and research based on interdisciplinary projects originating from the linkage of large volumes of data to expand understanding of the determinants and social and environmental policies affecting population health.
