Description
Job Summary:
CIDACS seeks a Front End Research Fellow to conduct activities involving climate and environmental data on the CIDACS-Clima platform, integrating data and supporting the development of dashboards.
Key Highlights:
1. Integrate climate, environmental, and health data for research.
2. Work in a multidisciplinary and innovative environment.
3. Build dashboards and visualizations for research outcomes.
The Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health – CIDACS, a laboratory affiliated with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Bahia, is selecting a Front End Research Fellow to work with climate and environmental data on the CIDACS\-Clima platform. This platform aggregates climate, environmental, and health data to investigate the effects of climate change on population health in contexts of social vulnerability, as well as to analyze how environmental and social protection policies can mitigate these effects.
Applicants will join the core research team of the project “CIDACS Climate and Environmental Platform (CIDACS\-Clima): Data for Studying Climate and Health”, developed by the Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (CIDACS/IGM/FIOCRUZ\-BA) at the Bahia Technology Park (Salvador, BA, Brazil), in partnership with the London School of Hygiene \& Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Applicants will be responsible for supporting the development of dashboards that integrate maps with analytical charts and associated time series to enhance visibility of the Project team’s outputs.
We seek highly motivated, creative candidates with strong communication skills in multidisciplinary environments.
We strongly encourage applications from Black researchers, LGBTQIA\+, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups.
**Responsibilities and Duties**
* Build dashboards integrating maps with analytical charts and associated time series;
* Develop visualization components for interactive maps, including layer controls, dynamic legends, and filters (spatial, temporal, and thematic);
* Document components and core workflows to ensure code maintainability;
* Ensure responsiveness and user experience (UX) across complex data analysis workflows;
* Implement advanced interaction mechanisms: zoom, spatial selection, area highlighting, and period/year toggling;
* Optimize interface performance for loading large volumes of data (tiles, geometry simplification, caching);
* Participate in defining map architecture, prototyping, and selecting geospatial technologies;
* Attend project-specific and general CIDACS meetings.
**Requirements and Qualifications**
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, or related technology-focused fields;
* Solid technical understanding of spatial data in raster and vector formats;
* Familiarity with tile technologies such as MapTiler and Google Earth Engine;
* Knowledge of spatially-enabled relational databases (PostGIS/PostgreSQL);
* Proficiency with version control tools (Git/GitHub) and deployment workflows;
* Experience consuming geographic APIs and integrating with spatial databases;
* Front-end development experience focused on mapping libraries (Leaflet, OpenLayers, D3\.js, Chart.js, Mapbox GL JS);
* Intermediate English proficiency for reading technical documentation;
* Basic knowledge of Linux and Bash for task automation;
* Understanding of spatial data processing (projections, coordinate reference systems CRS, buffer and intersection operations);
* Proactivity, ease of communication within multidisciplinary teams, and interest in technological innovation.
What else we’d like you to know: \*
* Experience handling large-scale health and demographic datasets (DATASUS, IBGE databases)
* Experience with map servers and tile generators (e.g., GeoServer, Tippecanoe, Martin, or MapProxy)
* Experience in research projects involving geospatial analysis or socio-environmental indicators;
* Familiarity with WebSIG performance concepts (Vector Tiles, client-side simplification);
* Basic knowledge of desktop GIS tools (QGIS or ArcGIS) for dataset preparation
* \- Absence of these qualifications does not disqualify applicants but will serve as tie-breaking differentiators
**Additional Information**
