**Spreading (Preparation)** Involves laying fabric in multiple layers (plies) onto a long table, aligning the selvages (edges) to ensure precision and avoid waste. * **Alignment and Tension:** The fabric must be stretched without excessive tension to prevent deformation or shrinkage after cutting. * **Pairs (or Face-to-Face):** Plies are stacked with right side to right side or wrong side to wrong side. * **Odd (or One-Way):** All plies are placed with the same side facing up. * **Resting:** Knitted fabrics, especially, require a "resting" period on the table after spreading to relax the fibers. * **Defect Marking:** The operator must mark possible fabric defects so they are excluded from cut pieces. * **Marker Making (Nesting)** * Marker making is the drawing of patterns onto the topmost fabric layer (or onto paper placed over it), aiming for maximum material utilization. * **Smart Nesting:** Positioning patterns to minimize scraps (leftovers). * **Grain Direction:** Respect the fabric's grain direction (vertical or horizontal) indicated on the patterns. * **Cutting** * Using manual or automatic tools to cut all fabric layers simultaneously, following the marker lines. * **Machines Used:** Vertical cutter (straight knife), circular cutter, band knife, or automated cutting tables (CAM/Laser). * **Organization:** After cutting, pieces are sorted by size, color, and style for delivery to the sewing department.
