Description
To work in the Automation and Robotics Group (ARO) of the Deputy Directorate of Technology (DAT).
ARO develops and maintains automation and control solutions for high-complexity scientific devices and critical infrastructures, applying state-of-the-art practices and operating at the frontier of knowledge, with an active commitment to incorporating and experimenting with the most advanced technologies available in the field. The team is also responsible for IT/OT convergence, developing systems for continuous data acquisition, storage, and visualization.
**Responsibilities and Duties**
The professional will engage in software development for control and monitoring of scientific and industrial equipment, including:
* Programming industrial controllers (PLCs) in Structured Text (ST), emphasizing modular, readable, and testable control code structure.
* Development and deployment of SCADA/IHM systems.
* Integration of industrial communication systems: configuration and diagnostics of protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, and MQTT/Sparkplug.
* Distributed systems for data acquisition and contextualization: implementation of industrial data architectures for process data acquisition, contextualization, and availability.
* Control software development in general-purpose languages: use of C and Python for implementing control logic, device drivers, diagnostic tools, and automation scripts.
* Software best practices applied in OT contexts: modular control software architecture, Git-based version control, and automated testing.
* Planning and executing tasks autonomously, aligned with project objectives and deadlines, within the scope of the role.
* Gathering technical requirements through direct interaction with various disciplines—including mechanical engineering, electromagnetism, and cryogenics—and translating process needs into control software specifications.
* Selecting the most appropriate technical solutions for each problem, evaluating trade-offs among available platforms and protocols, using a technically rigorous approach.
* Assuming responsibility for the technical quality of the systems developed.
* Contributing to the evolution of the team’s Industrial DevOps practices: code reviews, CI/CD pipeline maintenance, test writing, and documentation.
* Documenting design decisions and interfaces clearly so that other engineers can maintain the systems without dependence on the original author.
**Requirements and Qualifications**
* Degree in Control and Automation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
* Industrial control programming: ability to develop structured, modular, and readable control software. Candidates must be proficient in Structured Text (IEC 61131-3 ST) or demonstrate strong aptitude for it based on equivalent experience with structured languages (e.g., C, Python, etc.).
* General-purpose programming applied to automation (Python or C/C++): solid proficiency in software development, with capability to design and implement well-structured software modules having clearly defined responsibilities, following established software development best practices.
* SCADA/IHM system development: development of operator interfaces in commercial environments or via web/graphic languages and frameworks.
* Industrial communication protocols: ability to configure and implement communication with devices using industrial protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, and MQTT/Sparkplug B. Familiarity with fieldbuses (e.g., Profinet, EtherCAT) is a plus.
* Software best practices and Industrial DevOps: applies Git for version control; works within CI pipelines; writes unit tests; and applies software development best practices in automation and control contexts.
* Knowledge of Linux systems.
* Knowledge of containerization with Docker.
* Intermediate English proficiency.

At the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), we are driven by passion for science. Our environment is a vibrant research and development hub where professionals from diverse specialties collaborate to tackle complex challenges and create solutions for relevant problems—especially in health, energy, renewable materials, and sustainability.
We are a Social Organization supervised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), at the forefront of scientific research in Brazil. We operate Sirius—the largest scientific infrastructure ever built in the country—and are currently developing the Orion project: a dedicated laboratory complex for advanced pathogen research, which will be available to the national and international scientific community.
We offer a broad range of career opportunities for professionals with varied profiles. At CNPEM, we conduct cutting-edge research spanning nanotechnology, biosciences, biotechnology, biofuels, scientific instrumentation, and accelerator physics—carried out respectively by the National Nanotechnology Laboratory (LNNano), Biosciences Laboratory (LNBio), Biofuels Laboratory (LNBR), and the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). These initiatives are reinforced by challenging technology projects and the pursuit of solutions at the frontiers of engineering, led by the Deputy Directorate of Technology (DAT).
This entire ecosystem is supported by an integrated network of strategic areas—including information technology, communications, project management, legal & compliance advisory, human resources, finance, procurement, sustainability, and innovation—distributed across the General Directorate (DG) and the Shared Services Directorate (DSC). The Deputy Directorate of Infrastructure (DAI) ensures facility maintenance, engineering support, and architectural development, creating optimal conditions for all activities.
Ilum School of Science complements these efforts with a Bachelor’s program in Science and Technology, delivering innovative education that prepares future generations of scientists for tomorrow’s challenges.
We believe success is achieved through dedication, collaboration, and a clear sense of purpose. We value continuous development of our professionals and students, offering an inspiring and supportive environment conducive to both professional and personal growth.
