As LO’s representative on Svalbard, you will play a central role in safeguarding workers’ interests, contributing to the development of a sustainable and serious working life, and strengthening Norway’s presence and sovereignty in the North. As Advisor/Senior Advisor, you will serve as LO’s foremost representative on Svalbard, bearing overall responsibility for protecting the organization’s local interests and further developing LO’s position on Svalbard. The role also entails operationalizing and making visible LO’s overarching Svalbard and Northern Areas policy in practice. You will act as a key link between local conditions and national policymaking, ensuring insights from Svalbard inform LO’s engagement with central authorities on matters relating to working life, industrial development, and Norway’s presence in the North. The position is organizationally attached to the Department of Industrial Policy, but requires extensive coordination and contact with relevant specialist departments at LO headquarters. This position requires you to relocate to Svalbard and be physically present there. Moving to Svalbard is a major and important decision—both professionally and personally—and for the employment to succeed for both parties, the decision must be thoroughly considered and well-grounded, including discussions with any family members. Key responsibilities Maintain LO’s presence in Longyearbyen and on Svalbard. Promote and implement LO’s overarching Svalbard policy in collaboration with LO headquarters, the regional office in Troms and Finnmark, and the local organization. Support Svalbard’s development as a community with a serious and well-organized working and industrial life that underpins Norway’s presence and sovereignty. Strengthen LO’s position vis-à-vis decision-making authorities and relevant stakeholders. Enhance LO’s position and visibility among Svalbard’s population. Plan, coordinate, and execute a broad range of activities. The position involves both strategic work and operational follow-up, requiring you to independently manage a wide variety of tasks. Qualifications We seek a socially engaged and independent individual with sound understanding of working life and politics: Experience in trade union work is an advantage. Experience working or residing on Svalbard is an advantage. Good knowledge of LO’s policies, particularly regarding the Northern Areas and industrial policy. Experience in political work, processes, and relevant stakeholders. Ability to quickly grasp complex issues. Strong collaboration skills. Ability to work both independently and in cooperation with others. Practical sense combined with strategic understanding. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Relevant formal education and/or real-world competence. This position suits someone who envisions a longer stay on Svalbard and wishes to combine professional work with a stable life in Longyearbyen. Experience living and working in Arctic or polar regions will be given priority.
