Residents of Vila Maria Baixa and Parque Novo Mundo, led by regional municipal councilors, waged numerous campaigns against the Municipal Health Department to build a hospital addressing regional demand. The hospital — initially nicknamed “Vila Maria” — was thus constructed, with expectations of high-resolution and high-performance service. It was named after influential regional politician Councilman José Storopolli, whose family donated the land for construction. However, from its inauguration in 1992 until July 1994, its Surgical Center remained inactive, as did its surgical ward, orthopedics ward, and Intensive Care Unit.
