Residents of Vila Maria Baixa and Parque Novo Mundo, led by regional municipal councilors, engaged in numerous negotiations with the Municipal Health Department to build a hospital meeting the region’s healthcare needs. The hospital—initially named “Vila Maria”—was thus constructed, with expectations of becoming a high-performance, highly responsive facility. The hospital was named after influential local politician Councilman José Storopolli, whose family donated the land for its construction. However, from its inauguration in 1992 until July 1994, its Surgical Center remained inactive, as did its surgical ward, orthopedics department, and Intensive Care Unit.
