Job Summary: The professional will determine the contour, dimensions, and relative position of the earth's surface, as well as stake out engineering projects on site and perform distance and angle measurements. Requires knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, physics, and astronomy Its purpose is to determine the contour, dimensions, and relative position of a limited portion of the earth's surface, disregarding the curvature resulting from the Earth's sphericity. Surveying also involves staking out on-site engineering projects that have been designed. These operations essentially consist of measuring vertical and horizontal distances between various points, determining angles between alignments, and finding the orientation of these alignments. Complementing these operations is the calculation of observations, enabling the determination of distances, angles, orientations, positions, elevations, areas, and volumes. Using field data—after calculations—graphical representations can be produced in the form of maps, longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles, diagrams, and others. Conducting a survey requires not only familiarity with instruments used for measurements (e.g., theodolites, GPS, etc.) but also knowledge of geometry, plane and spherical trigonometry, physics, astronomy, and error theory including its compensation.
