Residents of Vila Maria Baixa and Parque Novo Mundo, led by regional municipal councilors, waged numerous campaigns against the Municipal Health Secretariat to build a hospital serving the region’s needs. The hospital—initially nicknamed “Vila Maria”—was eventually constructed, with expectations of delivering high-resolution and high-performance health care. It was named after influential local politician Councilor José Storopolli, whose family donated the land for its construction. However, from its inauguration in 1992 until July 1994, its Surgical Center remained inactive, along with its surgical and orthopedic wards and Intensive Care Unit.
